Maltese people frightened during the cold war period took some action to ensure fulfilling in their food needs. A tunnel and big room have been carved out in a rock and it got fitted with a milling system. From 1955 till 1989 flour for bread was produced in this subterranean mill. After years of near abandonment, the historic Xlendi mill was painstakingly restored including much of its original machinery. This project was carried out in collaboration with Perit William Lewis and commissioned by Munxar Local Council. In 2015 the project was honoured with a Din l-Art Helwa award.
