Available LanguagesLanguage En Bissegem - centre of flax retting and scutchingWe follow the Leie on the territory of Bissegem, once one of the centres of flax retting and scutching. The prairies were used for drying the retted flax. If we should leave the Leie and go to the main road we will remark the traditional flax workers houses, with two doors and a storage space under the attic or on the first floor. The second door, of which the upper part can be opened while the lower part stays closed, leads to a small workshop for breaking, scutching and hackling the flax. Small railway station (stop) of 1924 of the post-war reconstruction type, now re-used as a shop. Protected as historic monument since 14.06.2001. On the other side of the road Korttrijk-Gullegem is an extensive goods emplacement - from where once masses of flax were shipped. Gallery:
